I AM LEGEND TOPS U.K. BOX OFFICE CHART

WILL SMITH has started the new year on a high - his movie I AM LEGEND has debuted atop the first U.K. box office chart of 2008.

WILL SMITH as Robert Neville in 'I Am Legend'

The film, which stars Smith as the only man left on earth after a virus wipes out the world's population, took $13.1 million (GBP6.55 million) in its opening week of release, eclipsing The Golden Compass, which is in second place with $4.38 million (GBP2.19 million).

Last week's (ends28Dec07) most popular movie, Enchanted, slips down to number three with $4.3 million (GBP2.15 million), while St. Trinian's and Alvin and the Chipmunks round out the top five at fourth and fifth place respectively.
