CHRISTMAS IN THE CARIBBEAN FOR DENZEL WASHINGTON

Movie star DENZEL WASHINGTON risks the holiday travel rush every year so he and his family can spend Christmas night in the Caribbean.

The American Gangster star reveals he and his family exchange gifts early on Christmas Eve (24Dec) and then go to bed early so they can be up and gone on their annual winter retreat by the time other Americans are waking up on Christmas Day (25Dec).

He explains, "Everybody goes to bed early - still. Even my grown-man son; he's the biggest child of them all.

"By dinner on Christmas Day we're in the Caribbean... Our children are getting so much older so it's more difficult to get everybody together, so the holidays are the time.

"We try to spend a couple of weeks together in the summer and a couple of weeks together at Christmas."

And once on the beach, Washington becomes the family's festive film director: "I'm the camera operator; I'm the videographer."
