WATSON BELIEVED HE WOULD DIE DURING SURGERY

British opera star RUSSELL WATSON was so frightened during his emergency brain surgery operation, he convinced himself he was going to die.

The tenor - who went into surgery in October (07) to remove a tumour - had little faith in the procedure after doctors warned that his condition would be "touch and go" as a result.

In his first full interview since the operation, he tells U.K. breakfast TV show GMTV, "I wasn't really that aware of what was going on... I was flitting in and out of consciousness.

"I remember hearing lots of medical people saying words like 'haemorrhage' and lots of very scary things."

Watson was rushed to hospital in Greater Manchester, England while putting the finishing touches to his next album, which he still plans to release.

He first had surgery a year ago (06), and was unaware that his tumour had returned until he became seriously ill.

The 41-year-old is now due to undergo a lengthy course of radiotherapy in the New Year (Jan08).
