MORRISSEY has insisted he is not racist after he was accused of using 'naive and inflammatory' language on the topic of immigration in Britain in a U.K. music magazine.
The former Smiths frontman is alleged to have made the controversial remarks in a recent interview with NME, in which he decries the number of foreigners in his native country.
He is reported to have said: "Other countries have held on to their basic identity, yet it seems to me that England has thrown it away."
But Morrissey is adamant the magazine's decision to manipulate his words was nothing more than a publicity stunt.
He says, "I believe they have deliberately tried to characterise me as a racist in a recent interview I gave them in order to boost their dwindling circulation. I abhor racism and oppression or cruelty of any kind and will not let this pass without being absolutely clear and emphatic... Racism is beyond our common sense and has no place in our society."
NME confirmed Morrissey was taking legal action against the publication.
A spokesperson for the magazine says, "We can confirm we have received two writs from Morrissey's legal representatives pertaining to NME and its editor Conor McNicholas. NME takes this matter - and the issues it highlights - extremely seriously and we are currently in discussion with out legal representatives."
