KIDMAN 'FRIGHTENED' BY PHOTOGRAPHER

Actress NICOLE KIDMAN has told a court how she feared for her life after she was pursued by a photographer in Sydney, Australia two years ago.

The Moulin Rouge star gave evidence at photographer Jamie Fawcett's defamation suit against a regional newspaper which publicly criticised him for allegedly hounding Kidman.

The star told New South Wales state Supreme Court on Monday (19Nov07) how she was at the centre of a high speed car chase as she travelled to her parents' home in another part of the city for dinner in January 2005.

Kidman told the court she was "really, really scared" during the car ride and that she was "in tears and distressed" by the time she reached her parents' house.

She said, "I was frightened and I was worried there was going to be an accident."

Kidman also described two occasions when Fawcett had allegedly been intrusive when trying to photograph her - once while she was on her honeymoon with country music star Keith Urban in Tahiti in 2006, and again after Christmas in Sydney last year (06).

She said his intrusion of her privacy had prompted her to employ full-time security guards.

She adds, "I have been pursued many times. " have had this happen in relation to this particular man ... so many times.

"I employ people to protect me now. I employ people 24 hours to protect myself because I don't feel equipped to handle things."

Paparazzo Jamie Fawcett, 41, is suing John Fairfax Publications, the publishers behind local newspaper the Sun-Herald, after they ran a January 2005 article accusing Fawcett of allegedly planting a listening device outside Kidman's Sydney home. The article was found by a jury to be defamatory last year (06) and the current hearing aims to determine whether John Fairfax Publications are liable for damages.
