GRIFFIN AND THE AVETT BROTHERS WIN TWICE AT AMERICANA AWARDS

PATTY GRIFFIN and THE AVETT BROTHERS were the main winners at the Americana Music Association awards on Thursday (01Nov07), scooping two prizes each.

Griffin took home the gongs for Artist of the Year and Album of the Year for Children Running Through, triumphing over roots star Lucinda Williams, who was nominated in the same categories.

The Avett Brothers won the awards for Duo Group of the Year and New/Emerging Artist, while Willie Nelson and the late Townes Van Zandt were honoured with prizes for Lifetime Achievement for Songwriter and the President's Award respectively.

But the night belonged to the late Porter Wagoner - who lost his battle with lung cancer last week (28Oct07) - with stars paying tribute to the country music icon by performing a medley of his hits at the Ryman Auditorium ceremony in Nashville, Tennessee.

Emmylou Harris, Buddy Miller, Rodney Crowell, Mike Farris and Lauderdale were among the singers to take to the stage as part of the emotional musical salute, and Americana Music Director Jed Hilly presented Wagoner's daughter, Debra Jean, with a specially created accolade in the late star's honour - the American Original Award.

Other AMA winners included Darryl Scott (Song of the Year for Hank Williams' Ghost), Lyle Lovett (Trailblazer Award), Joe Ely (Lifetime Achievement for Performance) and Buddy Miller (Instrumentalist of the Year).

The AMA awards are part of the Annual Americana Festival and Conference, which began on Wednesday (31Oct07) and will continue until Saturday (03Nov07).
