DUBE'S DEATH PROMPTS CALL TO CRACKDOWN ON CARJACKING

LATEST: The tragic murder of reggae star LUCKY DUBE has prompted a call for action in the bid to stop fatal carjackings in South Africa.

The singer was shot by thieves in Johannesburg on Thursday night (18Oct07) - in front of his two children. He was 43.

The murder has stunned the country's lawmakers, prompting a call from top South African politicians to clamp down on the "barbaric and senseless" deaths that have become commonplace in and around Johannesburg in recent years.

African National Congress party leader Smuts Ngonyama says, "Brutal crimes such as these once more remind us... of the need to join hands with our law enforcement agencies and forge a bold front against crime."

Police have set up a task force to investigate Dube's death.

Updated reports suggest the reggae star was dropping off his two children at their home when the three gunmen attacked him. He managed to drive away from the scene after he was shot, but died at the wheel a short distance away and crashed his vehicle into a tree.
