BROWN RAPE CASE SPARKS LAW U-TURN

Soul legend JAMES BROWN has helped change fundamental rape laws in the state of Illinois - nine months after his death.

State officials have agreed to review existing laws following a failed lawsuit against the late singer.

Brown was accused of raping former publicist Jacque Hollander in 2005, 17 years after she claimed the star held her at gunpoint and threatened to kill her.

The singer denied the charge and the case judge rejected the lawsuit, claiming too much time had lapsed between the alleged incident and the allegations.

The new law, which will be implemented on 1 January, 2008, suspends the statute of limitations when the victim can prove he or she was intimidated or manipulated into staying quiet.

The current law gives rape accusers two years to file a lawsuit.

Brown passed away on 25 December last year (06).
