Director PETER GREENAWAY is confident his new movie NIGHTWATCHING has solved the REMBRANDT mystery which has confounded art critics for more than 300 years.
Dutch artist Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn's The Night Watch painting features numerous hidden clues and messages which have confused scholars ever since its conception in 1642.
The masterpiece was commissioned by local army generals who wanted their legacy to live on through Rembrandt's art, but Greenaway believes the painting really tells the story of the army captain's murder, which was then made to look like an training accident by his team of soldiers.
The moviemaker also claims his film accurately explains how the once wealthy and successful Rembrandt died a poor man in 1669 - a result of the militia's efforts to destroy the painter's reputation after he found out their secret, he alleges.
Speaking at the premiere of Nightwatching at the Venice Film Festival on Thursday (06Sep07), Greenaway says, "I can't prove to you every fact, but you can't disprove it either."
