ELTON PLAYS DOWN FEUD WITH MERCHANT

SIR ELTON JOHN has dismissed reports of a feud between himself and British comedian STEPHEN MERCHANT, after the actor left the Rocket Man singer waiting during a London awards ceremony earlier this week.

John was presenting the GQ Men of the Year Awards on Tuesday (04Sep07) when he announced Merchant as the winner of the Comedian of the Year accolade.

But the rocker was forced to wait several minutes for funnyman Merchant as he casually finished eating his dessert, downing his drink and scratching his cheek before finally making his way to the stage to collect his honour.

As he was presented with the award, he said, "I thought I would keep Elton John waiting for a change as he did to my friend Ricky (Gervais) at the Diana concert."

But Merchant later insisted he was only joking with John for the awards show stunt, "I was only joking of course, I feel very privileged to be in such esteemed company as Elton John. Don't get me wrong, I think he is fantastic but he is not the f**king Queen."

And John was also quick to play down any suggestion of rivalry between the pair.

His spokesman says, "Elton and Stephen are mates. They are good friends going way back."

Merchant's The Office co-star Gervais was brought on stage at the Concert For Diana in July (07) to introduce John's performance at the memorial gig - but he was left to improvise and entertain the crowd for 15 minutes before the singer emerged.
