Singer JANIS MARTIN has died. She was 67.
The country rock pioneer lost her battle with cancer on Monday (03Sep07) when she passed away at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina.
Martin was one of the first female performers to break through the heavily male-orientated rock n' roll genre in the 1950s, and found fame at the tender age of 15 with her hit Will You Willyum in 1956.
Her early success soon gained her the nickname 'The Female Elvis' and she went on to enjoy a career spanning over 50 years.
Martin's husband, Bradley Whitt, says, "She was a free-spirited lady who was devoted to her fan base - loved every fan that she had.
"She would stay for hours after a show and never leave a person standing, taking pictures and signing for them for four or five hours."
The star is survived by her third husband Whitt, a granddaughter and a great-granddaughter.
