GLITTER'S EARLY RELEASE HOPES CRUSHED

LATEST: Disgraced British rocker GARY GLITTER has had his hopes for a September (07) release from prison dashed, after the Vietnamese government refused to pardon him as part of a national amnesty.

The 1970s star - real name Paul Gadd - was convicted of committing obscene acts with two Vietnamese girls, aged 11 and 12, and jailed for three years in March 2006.

The singer - who is not due for release until 2008 - was hoping to be freed this week (begs03Sep07) as part of an annual government amnesty, which occurs on Vietnam's Independence Day.

Gadd's lawyer, Le Thanh Kinh, is now appealing for the fallen star to be released by the end of the year (07).

He says, "We are writing an appeal which must be considered by the courts. We will not know the result for a few months but we are looking for a release date some time in December."

The 62-year-old will be added to the sex offenders register when he returns to the U.K. - where he was jailed for four months in 1999 after child porn was found on his computer.
