SUSAN SARANDON fought back tears during a recent TV interview as she explained how her and partner TIM ROBBINS' activism has cost her family dear.

The actress was promoting new film In The Valley of Elah on American TV news show Extra when she began weeping.

The peace activist explained she is "very afraid" to speak out against the war in Iraq and for causes she feels compelled to support - because her often controversial comments have taken a toll on her family.

Fighting back tears, she told reporter Jerry Penacoli, "It's hard to be singled out, it's hard to have your kids talked about - but it's nothing compared to what actually these families are going through."

The Oscar winner admits that shooting her new movie, in which she plays the worried mother of a missing soldier, was tough - because she had the face the harsh reality of the plight of U.S. troops returning from the war in Iraq.

She feels terribly sad for those who have risked their lives for the country only to come back to a country that doesn't care.

She explained, "They don't have money, they don't have their sanity, they don't have their souls."
