HARD-FI RESCUE MANAGER
British rockers HARD-FI have been hailed heroes after rescuing their manager WARREN CLARKE from a beating by over-zealous nightclub bouncers in Spain.

The group are performing on Balearic party isle Ibiza this summer (07) and had to save their boss after door men refused to let him in a venue to see the band in action.
Clarke says, "I tired to explain I was the manager but he wasn't having any of it.
"All of a sudden I was dragged into the kitchen then Steve (Kemp - drummer) stormed in and Rich (Archer - singer) stopped the tunes and got everyone chanting, 'Bring him back.'
"I returned to the dancefloor a hero."

Australian pop star DANNII MINOGUE was mortified when a British newspaper published photographs of her enjoying a performance by a female lapdancer last year (06).

Minogue was photographed cavorting with a striper at a London nightclub in Sunday tabloid News Of The World in February 2006.
The Love + Kisses singer admits she has found it difficult to relax in public since she was "set up" in the lapdancing club.
She tells the British edition of Cosmopolitan magazine, "When the lap-dancer story came out in the tabloids, the first thing I thought was , 'I don't want my grandparents to see this.'
"I was totally set up, but it woke me up to the fact that there are some creepy, nasty people out there willing to do anything take advantage of someone famous. I now keep my guard up because I've realised not everyone has my best interests at heart."

Hip-hop star KANYE WEST had to hold his tongue when British royals PRINCES WILLIAM and HARRY started discussing 'bling' with him.

West has publicly denounced the term, declaring, "Only white people and older black people say 'bling' now. If a white person uses slang too early, then that makes them look like a wigger. But if black people use slang too late, then it makes them look like a wigger."
However, when he met the two princes at the Concert For Diana in London last month (Jul07), West couldn't bring himself to tell the royals that 'bling' was no longer cool.
He says, "One of them said, 'I thought those glasses were bling,' and the other one said, 'It's Kanye West, they'd have to be bling.'
"I didn't have the heart to tell them that I'm the anti-bling."

British singer/songwriter KATIE MELUA was trapped in a lift for 30 minutes while filming her latest video.

The Closest Thing To Crazy hitmaker, 22, was filming the promo for If You Were A Sailboat in Prague, Czech Republic, when the elevator suddenly stopped in between floors.
A crew member says, "It was boiling hot and no one knew they were there."
After 30 minutes trapped in the lift, Melua was eventually freed.

GEORGE MICHAEL STARTS COMMUNITY SERVICE
British pop star GEORGE MICHAEL has started his 100 hours of community service following his May (07) conviction for driving while unfit.

During the court case, Michael pleaded guilty to driving while unfit after police claimed he had a cocktail of drugs in his system including GHB and cannabis at the time of his arrest.
When he was sentenced in June (07), he was ordered to perform 100 hours of community service and was banned from driving for two years.
On Monday (13Aug07), Michael turned up in a chauffeur-driven car to a London homeless hostel and spent three hours helping workers in the garden.
Michael says, "I'm just like everyone else. If you do something stupid, you have to pay the price. I've been doing some gardening and really enjoyed it.
"I'll do whatever they want me to do. I don't want any special treatment."

JOLIE-PITTS TO ADOPT SECOND AFRICAN GIRL?
Hollywood couple ANGELINA JOLIE and BRAD PITT are planning to adopt a fourth child from Africa, according to British newspaper reports.

The Daily Mail claims the Mr + Mrs Smith co-stars are hoping to adopt a baby girl from Ethiopia - the same country they adopted two-year-old Zahara Marley from in 2005.
The couple are also adoptive parents to Cambodian-born Maddox, five; Vietnam-born Pax Thien, three; and biological parents to 15-month-old Shiloh Nouvel.
When they adopted Pax Thien earlier this year (07), Jolie admitted they chose a boy from south east Asian so Maddox could see the physical similarities between them, and hoped to find another African child for Zahara to identify with.
The Mail reports Jolie and Pitt will return to Ethiopia in November (07) to seek another sibling for their expanding brood.
A source says, "Brad and Angie have made no secret of the fact that they are keen to extend their rainbow family. But they've always been very careful to ensure that they leave enough time between kids so that each child fully integrates into the family and feels truly settled.
"Angie in particular feels very strongly that while Shiloh will grow up seeing her family resemblance between herself and her natural parents, and Maddox and Pax will feel a connection between their birthplaces, Zahara has no such close-knit bond."

STARS TO JUDGE SONGWRITING COMPETITION
A galaxy of legendary musicians including BRIAN WILSON, TOM WAITS, RAY DAVIES, NELLY FURTADO, JERRY LEE LEWIS, LORETTA LYNN and FRANK BLACK are the judges of this year's (07) International Songwriting Competition.
Wannabe songwriters' entries will be listened to by the A-list panel, who will award one lucky winner $25,000 (GBP12,500) in cash and a further $20,000 (GBP10,000) worth of prizes. Two runners-up will also take home cash prizes.
Ornette Coleman, former New Order star Peter Hook, The Cure's Robert Smith, Darryl 'D.M.C.' McDaniels, The Strokes' Julian Casablancas, Macy Gray and Sean Paul are also on the judges' panel.
The deadline for submissions is 15 October (07).

VAN HALEN ANNOUNCE REUNION TOUR, PLAN NEW ALBUM
VAN HALEN will tour North America with singer DAVID LEE ROTH for the first time since 1985, it was confirmed at a Los Angeles press conference on Monday (13Aug07).

Roth has reunited with original band members Eddie Van Halen and Alex Van Halen for the trek, which begins in Charlotte, North Carolina on 27 September (07). The line-up is completed by Eddie's 16-year-old son Wolfgang on bass.
Roth said, "This is the press conference you never thought you'd see - especially while we were still young, skinny and good-looking.
"It's a new band with a new sound and new energy from Wolfgang, but we'll play songs you know as well as the roof of your mouth."
And the revamped Van Halen are already planning a new album.
Roth added, "We're already plotting and planning. The idea is that it will continue on and on."

Irish pop mogul LOUIS WALSH has slammed the recent reunion of '90s pop act the SPICE GIRLS, declaring the five-piece are 'past their sell-by date'.

Things appear to get heated when one photographer starts shouting insults at Garrett, only for the actor to shout back 'Excuse me?' before slapping the camera.
According to website TMZ.com, where the footage has been posted, the photographer suffered a swollen eye when the camera was knocked into his face during the skirmish.

MUSICIANS FLOCK TO RECORD DYLAN COVERS FOR SOUNDTRACK
EDDIE VEDDER, SONIC YOUTH, JACK JOHNSON and WILLIE NELSON are among the stars who have contributed covers of BOB DYLAN songs for a new movie centred around the legendary rocker.
Director Todd Haynes' I'm Not There sees six different actors, including Christian Bale, Richard Gere and Cate Blanchett, playing Dylan at various points in his career.
For the soundtrack, artists including The Hold Steady, Mark Lanegan, former Pavement frontman Stephen Malkmus, Calexico, Yo La Tengo and Dylan himself have all recorded songs taken from the 66-year-old's back catalogue.
Five songs on the double album soundtrack, out later this year (07), feature backing from The Million Dollar Bashers, a supergroup featuring Sonic Youth stars Lee Ranaldo and Steve Shelley, Wilco guitarist Nels Cline, Television guitarist Tom Verlaine, Dylan bassist Tony Garnier, guitarist Smokey Hormel and keyboardist John Medeski.

CHICKEN POX CALLS OFF WILCO SHOWS
Rockers WILCO have been forced to postpone two concerts because guitarist NELS CLINE is suffering from chicken pox.
The 51-year-old's illness means Wilco cannot play gigs in Duluth, Minnesota and Winnipeg, Canada on Tuesday (14Aug07) and Wednesday (15Aug07) respectively.
The Duluth concert has been rescheduled for 4 September (07), while the Winnipeg performance is likely to now take place in 2008.
A statement on the band's website reads: "We're sorry to report that our good friend and Wilco guitarist extraordinaire Nels Cline has recently contracted a rather nasty case of the chicken pox.
"He is slowly on the mend but is not quite there yet... We apologise for the inconvenience, but we're really glad Nels seems to be over the hump and hope to see you out there soon."

SOCIALITE ASTOR DIES
New York socialite BROOKE ASTOR died of pneumonia on Monday (13Aug07). She was 105.
The real estate heiress passed away at 2pm at her New York home, her son Anthony Marshall's lawyer has confirmed.
Astor's friend and guardian Annette De La Renta - wife of designer Oscar De La Renta - tells the New York Post, "She left the world peacefully in a dignified manner and in her own house. We couldn't have asked for more."
De La Renta was granted guardianship of Astor last year (06) after a judge ruled the socialite's son Marshall was not caring for Astor properly and allowing her to live in squalor.
Marshall's own son, Philip Marshall, has accused his father of spending millions of dollars of Astor's money without her knowledge.
