FOLK SINGER MAKEM DIES

Celebrated folk musician TOMMY MAKEM has died after a long battle against cancer. He was 74.

Makem died from lung cancer in Dover, New Hampshire on Wednesday (01Aug07).

The Irish born singer was best known for international success in the band The Clancy Brothers And Tommy Makem in the late 1950s and 1960s.

Liam Clancy paid tribute to his life-long music partner.

He says, "Tommy was a man of high integrity, honesty, and his courage really shone through towards the end. He just would not give up."

"Our paths diverged, of course, many times, but our friendship never waned. I suppose he was my brother in many ways."

Last month, Makem returned to Ireland to receive an honorary degree from the University of Ulster despite his debilitating illness.
