MAY SLAMS LLOYD-WEBBER'S BBC TV TALENT SHOWS

QUEEN rocker BRIAN MAY has blasted SIR ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER's use of TV talent shows to find new recruits for his stage shows.

BRIAN MAY

The guitarist, who penned long-running Queen musical We Will Rock You, which runs on London's West End, is angered by the music impresario's approach to his search for new stars - branding the American Idol-style contests unfair.

Actress Connie Fisher triumphed to win the part of Maria Von Trapp in The Sound Of Music in How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria?, while Lee Mead became Joseph in the musical of the same name through show Any Dream Will Do.

May says, "It's really the influence of TV-promoted shows The Sound Of Music and Joseph. Both gained disproportionate advances, primarily because they had weeks of free advertising on TV. It's insane and incredible that the BBC didn't get paid for it."

But the rocker believes the popularity of the two shows will be short-lived.

He explains, "We are still rocking at the Dominion Theatre, primarily because people love We Will Rock You and come back with their friends for a good night out. Word of mouth, in the end, is the only real judge of what is valuable."
