SOPRANO STICH-RANDALL DIES AGED 79

American soprano TERESA STICH-RANDALL has died. She was 79.

The opera star passed away in Vienna, Austria on 17 July (07), although the cause of death has yet to be revealed.

Stich-Randall garnered worldwide critical acclaim for her performances in Mozart's Don Giovanni, Handel's Hercules and Rodelinda and her famous recording of Der Rosenkavalier in 1956.

The Connecticut-born singer - once hailed by Italian conductor Arturo Toscanini as "the find of the century" - split her time between her native U.S. and Europe, gracing the stage in the world's greatest opera houses.

In 1963, she became the first American to be awarded the Austrian title of Kammersängerin (chamber singer) - an honour presented to Austria's most respected artists.

She retired from the industry in 1971, after enjoying a 25-year career.
