ROW AFTER CHINESE DIRECTOR REJECTS REALITY TV WINNERS

TV tensions are mounting in China after the winners of a reality talent contest to find two stars for a movie adaptation were snubbed by the project's director.

Last month (Jun07) a minor opera actress and a film school student were picked by both judges and the public alike to play the leads in an adaptation of China's most famous novel, The Dream of the Red Chamber.

But the movie's director Hu Mei is rejecting both choices, insisting turning a literary classic into a screen drama is no game.

She says, "You can choose who you like, but I will direct as I like.

"I think the results are not satisfactory. Maybe I will try them in my other television programmes and when I shoot Dream of the Red Chamber it's possible that I may use them. But in the end maybe I will use none of them."
