R+B star RIHANNA clinched a U.K. number one - and a space in the record books - when her new single UMBRELLA secured top spot in the charts on download sales alone.

The singer is only the second artist to perform such a feat since Gnarls Barkley's Crazy, but the first female.
Rihanna, who was performing in Preston, England, when she heard the news, said, "I can't believe it, finally. I always stay at number two in the U.K., but thanks to the fans that get it, it's a great thing. My first Number One in the U.K., it's a great feeling.
"The single isn't even in the stores yet, a lot of people have got it digitally, so thank you to them."
Elsewhere in the singles chart Maroon 5's Make Me Wonder moved up to second from 19, pushing Beautiful Liar, a duet by Beyonce Knowles and Shakira, into third place. Snow Patrol's Signal Fire was also a big climber, moving up to fourth from 17th.
Linkin Park took top place in the albums race with Minutes To Midnight, while other new entries Release the Stars (Rufus Wainwright) and Tales Don't Tell Themselves (Funeral For A Friend) round out the top three.
