IL POSTINO BEACH 'RUINED' BY OVERZEALOUS FANS

An Italian beach immortalised in movie IL POSTINO has almost been destroyed by over-eager fans of the film.

Pollara beach on the island of Salina was 33 feet (10.5 metres) wide at the time of filming in 1994, but now only stretches to 12 feet (3.65 metres) - with one of the film's stars voicing her concerns over the erosion.

Maria Grazia Cucinotta, who played poet Beatrice Russo in the film, says, "I am upset that this is happening and that nature is not being looked after."

Fabrizio Leofante, a spokesperson for Italian culture protection group Italia Nostra, says, "We keep warning them, but it seems they are determined to sink this beautiful bay, We have photographed tourists taking home bags of sand and rock without anyone stopping them."
