JURORS HEAR SPECTOR HURLING ABUSE AT EX

LATEST: Jurors in the murder trial of troubled music mogul PHIL SPECTOR were left shocked in court yesterday (07May07) when a tape featuring the record producer hurling expletives at an ex was played to them.

Spector was heard growling "be careful what you say to me because nothing you say is worth your life" to former lover Dorothy Melvin on a 14-year-old answering machine message.

Melvin claims the expletive-laced message came after her ex-boyfriend had pointed a handgun at her during a row.

Spector has pleaded not guilty to shooting actress Lana Clarkson at his Alhambra, California mansion in February 2003. His defence team has argued Clarkson shot herself, while prosecutors have called Melvin and other former Spector girlfriends to testify the producer had a history of reckless gun use.

Melvin has already testified that Spector threatened her with a gun and hit her in the head when she tried to leave his home.

As well as the expletive-laced message, Spector also offered Melvin apologies for his actions is a series of related phone messages.

He was heard saying, "I just want you to know what you did last night was the right thing. It's what you had to do. It's OK."

And, in another message, Spector said, "You never did anything wrong. It was all me and my inexcusable behaviour. I apologise... I'll stay out of your life."

The jurors were given transcripts from which to read along with the statements after the judge turned down a defence motion to edit out profanity.

The trial continues.
