McCartney beat fellow pop star Sting, Katherine Jenkins and Bryn Terfel to the award with his album Ecce Cor Meum - which was inspired by his love for late wife Linda.

The award, which was voted by classical music fans, was announced at last night's ceremony in London's Royal Albert Hall.

Other winners included Russian soprano Anna Netrebkom, who won Singer of the Year, while Norwegian pianist Leif Ove Andsnes walked away with the Instrumentalist of the Year award. George Fenton, who composed the music for The BBC's Planet Earth, won the Soundtrack Composer of the Year Award.

Conductor Vernon Handley was presented with the lifetime achievement award.
