Supernatural Disney film The Invisible is a new entry at number two, with takings of $7.6 million (GBP3.8 million), while Nicolas Cage action movie Next premieres at number three with earnings of $7.2 million (GBP3.6 million).
Sir Anthony Hopkins thriller Fracture took $7.1 million (GBP3.55 million), dropping two places to number four, and figure-skating comedy Blades Of Glory, last week's number three movie, is at number five with takings of $5.2 million (GBP2.6 million).
Movie bosses are hoping the releases of high-profile sequels Spider-Man 3, Shrek The Third and Pirates Of The Caribbean: At World's End in the upcoming weeks will reverse the currently disappointing box office.
