The Holes star, who will feature in summer blockbuster Transformers and has just been confirmed as Indiana Jones' new sidekick, toppled comedy Blades of Glory's two-week reign on top with an opening weekend take of $23 million (GBP11.8 million).
The child star's thriller is a low-budget version of Alfred Hitchcock's Rear Window.
Blades of Glory slipped to number two on the new box office chart and takes its three-week tally past $90 million (GBP46 million).
Halle Berry and Bruce Willis' new thriller Perfect Stranger came in at a disappointing number four with just $11.5 million (GBP5.9 million), while period action film Pathfinder failed to follow 300 to the top of the charts, debuting at number six with a lowly $4.8 million (GBP2.5 million).
Meanwhile Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez's much-hyped double bill, Grindhouse, took another slap after failing to perform at the box office last week (08Apr07) - it fell from fourth to tenth on the new countdown with a meagre $4.2 million (GBP2.15 million) second weekend take.
And the hype surrounding Eddie Griffin's new action film Redline, which included the funnyman crashing his producer's uninsured $1.2 million (GBP615,000) Ferrari, failed to pay off the film missed out on a top 10 spot, coming in 11th with just $4 million (GBP2 million).
