LATEST: The widower of late British pianist JOYCE HATTO has apologised for stealing other artists works and releasing them under his wife's name, but insists he would go through the deception again.
Following an investigation by British classical magazine Gramophone, WILLIAM BARRINGTON-COUPE admitted in a letter to Swedish record label BIS that some of the recordings in his wife's name were not made by her.
Barrington-Coupe said he used the other performers' work in the last years of Hatto's life because she was too ill to play the piano herself after suffering from cancer.
He tells British newspaper The Sunday Times, "Joyce's life was hell. She was in such pain, and it was so humiliating for her for such a long time.
"Yes, I would do it again. Because it made Joyce so happy. But this time I wouldn't publish the CDs.
"It wasn't something I liked doing. But Joyce's music was everything to her - and to me, too."
Barrington-Coupe said his wife's illness was evident on recordings they made together so he sought out pianists with a similar sound to patch over her work.
