MIRREN ALMOST TURNED DOWN ROYAL ROLE

Oscar winner DAME HELEN MIRREN nearly missed out on portraying ELIZABETH II in THE QUEEN, because she didn't think she would do the British monarch justice.

On Sunday (25FEB07) night, the 61-year-old won the Best Actress Academy Award for her role in The Queen.

But Mirren admits she came close to turning down the part because she feared she was not up to the task.

She says, "I said to myself, 'Don't do it. Be very careful.'

"It was the most frightening project to me. I think playing someone who is alive is a no-win situation, because as good as you are, you will never be a tenth as good as they are at being themselves."
