Security at the Oscars is at an all-time high - with hundreds of Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) officers making sure the event runs smoothly.
Specially-trained firefighters, sniffer dogs and bomb disposal experts are joining the LAPD at the awards. Every street - 12 in all - enveloping the Kodak Theatre was sealed off prior to the event, but some surrounding streets have been closed since Monday (19FEB07).
Police spokesman PAUL VERNON says, "We've taken every measure that we feel necessary to protect such a high profile event.
"This is a premier event for Los Angeles, Hollywood, all the eyes of the world are on us. We have never had a serious incident, but we are prepared to address any potential incident, however large or small."
But experts admitted the risk of a terrorist attack on the Oscars is relatively low, adding much of the security deployed is to protect the stars from over-enthusiastic fans and paparazzi.
RANDOLPH HALL, a homeland security specialist, adds, "A high-profile event is an imaginable thing that could happen. Nevertheless, there really isn't a lot of history of attacks at events like that. The Munich Olympics are the most prominent we can think of."
