SCORSESE HONOURED BY DIRECTORS GUILD OF AMERICA

MARTIN SCORSESE chances of winning his first Oscar have been boosted after he landed the Directors Guild of America (DGA) award for THE DEPARTED yesterday (03FEB07).

The 64-year-old beat the directors of BABEL, DREAMGIRLS, LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE and THE QUEEN to win his first DGA award after six previous nominations.

The prestigious prize is regarded as a reliable indicator as to who will win the Best Director Oscar, as the DGA winner has only failed to land the Oscar six times in the award's 58-year history.

Scorsese said, "I didn't think I'd be standing here tonight. I was just trying to make a good picture. I don't know (about the Oscar). It's good to have a nomination."
