US SOAP FANS CELEBRATE EASTENDERS VICTORY

US fans of hit British soap EASTENDERS are celebrating in Washington DC after saving an American broadcast of the show from being axed.

A coalition of desperate viewers raised more than $50,000 (GBP25,600) to pay for WETA, the local branch of the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS), to keep the London characters on their screens two more years.

Last year (06), WETA proposed ditching the programme in the area later this month (JAN07) because, at $25,350 (GBP13,000) a year, the company feared it was a poor investment.

WETA vice-president of external affairs MARY STEWART was stunned at the fans' response.

She says, "I do have to say it's an amazing group of members who really rallied around what they care about for us."

In Washington around 8,000 homes tune in to EastEnders every week.
