QUASTHOFF CANCELS CARNEGIE HALL CONCERTS

Bass-baritone THOMAS QUASTHOFF has been forced to cancel a performance of Mahler's KINDERTOTENLIEDER at New York City's Carnegie Hall after falling ill with a bronchial infection.

It is the second time this season that the 47-year-old German singer has had to cancel a performance at the famed concert hall.

Quasthoff was to have performed the Mahler with CRISTOPH ESCHENBACH and the Philadelphia Orchestra next Tuesday (23JAN07).

Carnegie Hall officials said this week that a substitute work will be announced. Bruckner's Ninth Symphony remains on the program.

Last year (06), Quasthoff was scheduled to open Carnegie's season on 4 October (06), performing songs from Mahler's DES KNABEN WUNDERHORN with the Cleveland Orchestra, but he was sidelined by an inflamed vocal chord.

Carnegie spokeswoman SYNNEVE CARLINO said of the cancellations,"They assured us that they are really two separate cases."

Quasthoff's next appearance at Carnegie Hall is scheduled for 5 March (07), when he hosts a program on song at Zankel Hall.
