David Bowie, one of rock's most iconic figures, reaches another milestone in his life on Monday when he celebrates his 60th birthday.
The Heroes singer might turn 60 on 8 January, but he isn't putting his feet up just yet and is already planning a massive outdoor gig in New York later this year (07). It will be his first concert in three years since cutting short a 2004 tour after suffering a heart attack.
Bowie released his self-titled, debut solo album in 1967 and rose to prominence with the melodic Space Oddity in 1968, which went to number five in the UK singles charts.
But it was in the 1970s that saw the musical chameleon at his most creative. Credited as a key figure in the glam rock era, he set a new tone in music with his androgynous alter ego Ziggy Stardust.
Bowie received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2006.
As well as musical stardom, he has starred in a number of films including Labyrinth and The Man Fell To Earth.
