BONO AWARDED HONORARY KNIGHTHOOD

Campaigning rocker BONO has been awarded an honorary knighthood for 'his services to the music industry and for his humanitarian work,' by QUEEN ELIZABETH II.

The U2 frontman will be presented the honour by the British ambassador to Ireland in a ceremony in Dublin in the new year (07).

A statement from the British Embassy in the Irish capital reads: "Her Majesty The Queen has appointed Bono to be an honorary Knight Commander Of The Most Excellent Order Of The British Empire in recognition of his services to the music industry and for his humanitarian work."

The rocker has worked tirelessly to end poverty in the developing world and helped organise last year's Live 8 extravaganza.

Because he is Irish, Bono - real name PAUL HEWSON - can only be presented with an honorary title.

Like BOB GELDOF, he is also prohibited from using the title 'Sir' because he is an Irish citizen.
