COLOMBIAN ROCKER HONOURED WITH PEACE PARK

Colombian rocker JUANES, who has led a crusade against land mines, will be honoured with a giant park in his hometown of Medellin designed especially for victims who have lost their limbs.

Construction on the $4 million (GBP2 million) Juanes Peace Park will begin next week (beg25DEC06) and will include sporting and recreation facilities designed for wheelchair users and the disabled.

Juanes, real name JUAN ESTEBAN ARISTIZABAL VASQUEZ, explains, "It's a place for people to gather, share experiences and learn to tolerate their differences."

The government blames leftist rebels for planting most of the 100,000 mines in the country which maimed and killed a record 1,070 victims last year - more than any country in the world.

Many of the victims live in the Medellin neighbourhood, which has been hit hard by the violence associated with the country's 50-year civil conflict.

Juanes, who has won 12 Latin Grammys, was named one of the world's 100 most influential people by Time Magazine in 2005 and is one of the most committed celebrity activists on land mines.
