Christmas has come early for WILL SMITH - days after landing his first Best Actor Golden Globe nomination, his new movie THE PURSUIT OF HAPPYNESS has shot to the top of the US box office with an impressive $27 million (GBP13.8 million) debut weekend.

The film, in which Smith plays real-life homeless hero CHRIS GARDNER, beat fantasy film ERAGON to the top spot by almost $4 million (GBP2 million).
Family film CHARLOTTE'S WEB debuted in third place with $12 million (GBP6.2 million), while MEL GIBSON's APOCALYPTO slipped up after taking the top spot in its first weekend a week ago (10DEC06) - the epic fell to number six with a second weekend take of $7.7 million (GBP3.9 million).
