PARTON PLEDGES MONEY TO HOMETOWN HOSPITAL

Country music legend DOLLY PARTON has pledged $500,000 (GBP256,000) to a $90 million (GBP46 million) hospital and cancer centre in her home state of Tennessee.

The JOLENE singer wanted to honour ROBERT F THOMAS, the country doctor who delivered her in 1946, and made a surprise appearance at a dinner hosted by a health care provider on Tuesday (12DEC06) to announce the donation.

She said, "I have wonderful memories of Dr Thomas. I know the grand vision of this hospital would have made Doctor Thomas proud."

Parton said of Doctor Thomas, "Daddy paid him with a sack of cornmeal and I've always joked that I've been raking in the dough ever since!"

The singer, who is known for philanthropy around her Smoky Mountains hometown, pledged the money from her Dixie Stampede dinner theatre and the Dollywood Foundation, a charitable organisation spun off from her Dollywood theme park.

She adds, "I felt like it was time to step up and do a little more."
