GENTRY TOLD TO GIVE UP HUNTING FOR GOOD
Country star TROY LEE GENTRY has been told to give up hunting for good by animal activists People For The Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) after he was found guilty of illegally killing a confined bear.
Under a plea agreement reached last week (27NOV06), the 39-year-old MONTGOMERY GENTRY singer agreed to pay a $15,000 (GBP7,700) fine - give up hunting, fishing and trapping in Minnesota for five years, and forfeit both the bear's hide and the bow he used to illegally hunt and kill the animal in 2004.
But PETA bosses insist the country star should go further and give up hunting full stop.
PETA wildlife biologist STEPHANIE BOYLES says, "PETA is relieved to know that Mr Gentry won't be able to shoot trapped animals for fun again anytime soon, but he needs to admit that killing CUBBY (the bear) was wrong and pledge to never kill animals for sport again.
"Animals on so-called canned-hunting ranches are often accustomed to humans and are unable to escape from the enclosures that they are confined to, which range in size from just a few yards to several acres.
"Most of these ranches operate on a `No kill, no pay' policy, so it is in owners' best interests to ensure that clients get what they came for. It's a pathetic excuse for a sport."
