SOAP STAR 'FACING AXE' AFTER RACIST RANT

British actor BRUCE JONES could lose his job on UK soap CORONATION STREET after launching a racist tirade at a charity auction last month (23NOV06).

The 53-year-old star told guests at a fundraising dinner for kids' charity MedEquip4Kids in Manchester, northern England that Asian guests were "only wanting a passport".

British newspaper the News Of The World reports Jones had a meeting with Coronation Street producers on Friday (01DEC06) to discuss the incident, and he's only avoided immediate punishment because his father passed away on Thursday (30NOV06).

A show insider told the newspaper, "Bruce had watched his father die the previous night and then faced losing his job the very next day for an act of gross stupidity. But the matter is far from over and Bruce will still have to face the music when he returns from compassionate leave."

Jones has apologised for his racist rant, telling the newspaper, "It was not my intention to upset anybody and I apologise unreservedly if anyone was insulted or upset. I have spoken to my bosses and apologised to them."
