GENTRY REGRETS BEAR KILLING DRAMA

LATEST: Country star TROY LEE GENTRY regrets falsely registering a captive bear as being killed in the wild and insists the ordeal has been "a humbling experience".

Under a plea agreement reached on Monday (27NOV06), the 39-year-old singer agreed to pay a $15,000 (GBP7,700) fine; give up hunting, fishing and trapping in Minnesota for five years; and forfeit both the bear's hide and the bow he used to illegally hunt and kill the animal in 2004.

The MONTGOMERY GENTRY singer explains, "I relied on the experts around me for guidance, and I regret that today.

"Not so much because I was fined and punished, but because it appears that I don't have respect for the law. This has been a humbling experience for me, and one which I deeply regret."

The bear, named CUBBY, was killed in a three acre (1.2 hectare) private enclosure.

The plea allowed Gentry to avoid a trial, which had been scheduled to start on Monday (27NOV06) in Duluth, Minnesota.

Gentry said he participated in improperly tagging the bear without realising the seriousness of what he was doing, adding, "For that I am truly sorry."
