JACK PALANCE DIES

Oscar-winning actor JACK PALANCE died yesterday (10NOV06) at his home in Montecito, California. He was 87.

The CITY SLICKERS star died of natural causes and was surrounded by his family when he passed away, according to his spokesperson DICK GUTTMAN.

The star delighted viewers of the 1992 Academy Award ceremony when he accepted his Oscar for best supporting actor by dropping to the stage and performing one-armed push-ups to demonstrate his physical prowess.

Oscar host BILLY CRYSTAL turned the moment into a running joke and made increasingly outlandish remarks about Palance's accomplishments throughout the night's presentations.

Palance appeared alongside JOAN CRAWFORD in the 1952 film noir classic SUDDEN FEAR, and the 1953 western SHANE, as evil gunslinger JACK WILSON, who toughed it out with star ALAN LADD in one of the big screen's definitive bar brawls.

He was born in Hazelton, Pennsylvania to Russian-immigrant parents and arrived in Hollywood in the late 1940s with a rebuilt face after he was badly burned in World War II.

Palance is survived by three children from his first marriage to actress VIRGINIA BAKER (the couple divorced in 1966), and his widow, ELAINE ROGERS (whom he married in 1987).
