LIPS GET HOMETOWN ALLEY

Rockers THE FLAMING LIPS are to be honoured in their native Oklahoma City with their own alley.

The Flaming Lips perform on Day 3 of the 02 Wireless Festival in Hyde Park. London, England - 23.06.06

City officials have voted to name a downtown street in the band's honour.

And, in fitting with the group's unkempt image, the Flaming Lips Alley is a dimly-lit area strewn with litter.

Dignitaries will clean up the alleyway before the unveiling ceremony and mayor MICK CORNETT insists the group are thrilled by the honour.

He tells MTV News, "At first, we were slightly concerned that naming a previously unnamed alleyway after them might not be very appropriate, but we reached out to them with the idea, and their management gave us their blessing.

"This isn't just some dark alley in the middle of nowhere. Everyone knows where this is. It's a high-traffic area in Bricktown.

"In naming it, we also realise that it's an opportunity to make the alley - and all areas in Bricktown - look as good as possible."
