MADONNA'S DAVID OWES HIS GOOD FORTUNE TO HIV GIRL

Pop superstar MADONNA fell in love with her new adopted baby DAVID when she saw him in the arms of an eight-year-old HIV victim.

The RAY OF LIGHT singer was researching a documentary she is financing about the orphans of Malawi, where she has set up a charity called Raising Malawi, when she became "transfixed" by the sick boy.

Madonna went out of her way to find out more about the tot and the more she learned the more she realised she wanted to adopt him.

She recalls, "I was allowed to view footage and photographs of a lot of the children and the very first time I saw David was actually because a girl that was being interviewed in the film... she was talking to the director with a translator and she was holding this child and I became transfixed by him.

"That's really the first time I would say I saw him and I later on asked who he was and what his name was and I started getting information about him."

But just as Madonna started the process of adopting the child, she was told that Malawian adoption laws could make her plans impossible - and she should select "other candidates".

Speaking out about the adoption for the first time on yesterday's (25OCT06) OPRAH show in America, Madonna explained, "I did have my heart set on David but I also was told that there's a possibility you won't be able to adopt him, so I was told to look around all the orphanages and I had to come up with other candidates.

"When I went there I told myself you have to be prepared that you're going to come home without David. I did meet other children that I was open to adopting so if it hadn't worked out with David, I would have considered any of those children a blessing."

But Madonna got her wish and recently started the adoption process with baby David at her home in London. The child's welfare with the star and her husband GUY RITCHIE will be monitored during an interim adoption period over the next 18 months before Madonna becomes David's adopted mother.
