ELTON GUIDES CHAPLIN THROUGH REHAB

SIR ELTON JOHN has offered his services as an unlikely advisor to troubled rocker TOM CHAPLIN, and the ROCKET MAN has reportedly spent hours on the phone counselling the KEANE star through rehab.

Elton was saddened when he heard about Chaplin's battle with alcohol and cocaine addiction, and was determined to help him in any way possible.

The veteran hitmaker was the last person the BEDSHAPED singer expected to hear from, but Elton believes he is the perfect advisor after beating his own substance abuse demons nearly 20 years ago.

A friend of Chaplin's says, "Tom's had so much support after going into rehab but he never expected it would come from someone like Sir Elton John.

"At first he thought it was a wind up - why would Elton take the time out to contact him? Even though they met at Live 8 last year (05) they weren't exactly close friends.

"Tom was moved by the gesture and they've been in touch frequently. Elton knows exactly what Tom's going through."

Chaplin left top London rehab clinic The Priory earlier this month (OCT06), but is still receiving treatment.

THE KILLERS lead singer BRANDON FLOWERS has responded to criticism he is ''trying to be too English'', insisting one of the goals with the band's new album SAM'S TOWN was to have a more American sound.

Flowers explains, "For me, the things that were deliberate were to sing like an American, because I'm an American.

"I guess the American thing came from people who were talking about how English we sounded, and me actually singing with a fake accent.

"Americans are getting a bad rap right now, and we felt that everywhere that we went, whether it was Germany or France or wherever, there's a look that you get when you open your mouth.

"It's because of the war and everything that's going on. It's understandable, but to an extent it's not fair because we're just people that were born here."

Celebrities including MADONNA and SIR MICK JAGGER are paving the way for Britain's National Giving Week by customising Doc Martens boots to be sold off on eBay.

Talk show host OPRAH WINFREY has finally convinced a man who has been backing her for President in 2008 that she will not run for office.

Kansas City, Missouri maths teacher PATRICK CROWE has been on a non-stop three-year "Oprah for President" campaign, complete with T-shirts with Winfrey's image, banners and signs.

Winfrey's lawyers threatened legal action against Crowe until the talk show titan told them to back off, and she decided to call Crowe personally to discuss the matter.

He tells the New York Post, "(Oprah) got right to the bottom line. She said, 'Well I just wanted to let you know, I'm not going to do it.'

"Her tone was calm and peaceful - not at all angry. She thanked me for what I've been doing."

Winfrey urged Crowe to turn his attention to Illinois Senator BARAK OBAMA, who she has hinted that she would support if he ran for president one day.

She suggested that he read Obama's latest book AUDACITY OF HOPE and said she planned to send him a copy.

Crowe said that despite the call from Winfrey, he plans to continue his campaign and hopes she will reconsider a run for the Oval Office.

She says, "I know people who have seen the movie and have compared her to Diana and Paris, but I don't see that connection because they belong to a unique phenomenon of our time.

"I just liked uncovering the human side of this famous, notorious queen. I got the ANTONIA FRASER book and then thought about the challenge of making a period movie. There's so much more to her story. I wanted to focus on the teenage years because that's what really struck me.

"Imagine what it would be like to be 14 and sent to marry someone who's not interested in you - all of the stuff she went through and how she turned to partying and frivolity as a way to make herself feel better or as an escape. It was fun but overwhelming too."

FOUR MEMBERS OF DANITY KANE INJURED IN CAR CRASH

Four members of SEAN 'DIDDY' COMBS' group DANITY KANE were injured in a limousine accident on Thursday (12OCT06) en route to a performance in Toledo, Ohio.

The five female singers, AUBREY MORGAN O'DAY, D WOODS, SHANNON RAE BEX, DAWN ANGELIQUE RICHARD and ANDREA AURORA FIMBRES won the third instalment of Combs' reality talent competition MAKING THE BAND.

According to an accident report filed with the Toledo Police Department, the group members, minus Woods, who caught a later flight to Toledo, had just finished an appearance at a radio station.

They were heading to a concert performance when the left side of their black Lincoln Town Car was struck by another vehicle at an intersection.

Three passengers complained of head pain and were transported to St Vincent's Mercy Medical Center by another limousine that arrived on the scene.

A fourth member was also involved in the accident, according to MTV News.

Two of the three people identified in the report - Bex and O'Day (listed in the report as AUBREY L'DAY) - are members of Danity Kane.

According to a St Vincent's spokesperson, members of the group "were treated and released."

The group was forced to cancel Thursday evening's (12OCT06) performance, as well as a show on Friday night (13OCT06) in Rochester, Michigan.

The SHOW STOPPER stars were recently announced as one of the opening acts on CHRISTINA AGUILERA's North American tour, which is scheduled to begin in February (07).

Classic Australian rock band MIDNIGHT OIL will be inducted into the Hall of Fame at the Australia Recording Industry Association Awards on 29 October (06).

The 37-year-old's new abode is an early 1970s modernist one-story house with six bedrooms and seven bathrooms designed by architect HAL LEVITT.

Levitt has also designed homes for MARY KATE and ASHLEY OLSEN, SEX AND THE CITY creator DARREN STAR and late writer NORMAN COUSINS.

Since the couple split, she has been leasing a two-bedroom home with 50 feet (15 meters) of beachfront in Malibu, California.

GRUDGE SEQUEL KNOCKS SCORSESE FROM THE TOP OF US BOX OFFICE

Horror sequel THE GRUDGE 2 topped the US box office over the weekend (ends15OCT06) with $22 million (GBP12.2 million), knocking director MARTIN SCORSESE's film THE DEPARTED into second place.

The Departed took in $18 million (GBP10 million), while ROBIN WILLIAMS' new film, MAN OF THE YEAR, opened in third place with $12.6 million (GBP7 million).

Animated film OPEN SEASON took fourth place with $11 million (GBP6.1 million) and THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE: THE BEGINNING rounded out the top five with $7.75 million (GBP4.3 million).

Two other new movies debuted in the top 10 - action thriller THE MARINE starring professional wrestler JOHN CENA opened at number six with $7 million (GBP3.9 million).

Meanwhile, ONE NIGHT WITH THE KING, the saga of the biblical story of ESTHER, came in at number nine with $4.3 million (GBP2.4 million).

INFAMOUS, starring British actor TOBY JONES as famed author TRUMAN CAPOTE, opened weakly with $435,000 (GBP242,000) in 170 theaters, despite good reviews.

COPPOLA DESPERATE FOR BABIES

Pregnant MARIE ANTOINETTE director SOFIA COPPOLA wants to have more children - especially as pregnancy allows the star to feast on cakes.

Coppola, who is expecting her first child with French rocker THOMAS MARS in December, admits she doesn't want her offspring to grow up as an only child.

She says, "I've been working for so long that motherhood has been on the back burner but now it's pretty much the only thing on my mind and I don't think this baby will be an only child. There will definitely be more.

"Besides, it's nice to have an excuse to eat cake all the time."

LOHAN TO PLAY SEXY SCENES WITH KNIGHTLEY

LINDSAY LOHAN and KEIRA KNIGHTLEY are set to light up the screen together in a film about Welsh poet DYLAN THOMAS, in which they play women who are sexually attracted to each other.

The story revolves around the wordsmith and his wife CAITLIN, and a real-life incident in which her childhood friend VERA PHILLIPS, played by Knightley, and her future husband open fire on Thomas' home with a machine gun and a hand grenade.

Lohan is thrilled about working with Knightley, whose character Lohan describes as having a cryptic relationship with her own.

She tells MTV News, "(Keira) is older than me, but she kind of has a mysterious relationship with my lover. And there's somewhat of a lesbian undertone."

Knightley's mother, SHARMAN MACDONALD, wrote the screenplay for the film, which explores the events that led up to the shooting incident and its effect on the Thomas family.

DIDDY HAS DOUBTS HE'S HAVING TWIN GIRLS

Rap mogul SEAN 'DIDDY' COMBS isn't convinced his longtime girlfriend KIM PORTER is expecting twin girls, even though test results reveal the twins are female.

The star says the new additions to the family are due "any minute now," but remains sceptical about the doctor's prediction.

He explains, "See, I was never one on technology. They're saying its girls, but I'll believe it when I see it.

"I'm just that type of person. I just can't really believe it - I need to really see it. I don't know. In this world anything can happen. People are wrong about other things.

"I just want to wait. I'm patient. It's not about what they are as long as they are healthy and beautiful."

Combs says the couple don't have any names picked out and want to wait until the twins actually arrive.

He adds, "I'm a spur of the moment guy. I'm going to wait right there and at that moment when I see them, the names come. It's the royal twins!"
