LACHEY: 'NEWLYWEDS CONTRIBUTED TO DIVORCE'

Lachey appeared on THE LATE SHOW WITH DAVID LETTERMAN on Wednesday (12OCT06) and the talk show host quizzed him about the demise of his marriage.

Letterman said he thought taping the show would actually make the marriage stronger to which Lachey replied, "About that. Not so much.

"I don't think so... it was among the dumber ideas I think I've ever seen executed in history."

Lachey claimed it seemed like a good idea at the time: "For a while, I think we actually enjoyed doing the show as well. It was just so invasive that it became a problem."

When Letterman asked if the show contributed to the split he said, "You know that's one of those things where I think until you get enough hindsight and enough clarity and perspective, I don't think you can really know what happened. But, I certainly think it was probably a factor."

The WHAT'S LEFT OF ME star insists is still friendly with his ex-wife, adding, "I think both of us have handled it about as well as we possibly could, under the microscope that we're under and everything.

"But, I think, again, with time, it'll give us a better opportunity to redefine our relationship."

GOLDFRAPP: 'ANIMAL ABUSE IS SAME AS HUMAN ABUSE'

British singer ALISON GOLDFRAPP has slammed people who abuse animals, arguing they should be punished as if they had assaulted a person.

Goldfrapp has teamed up with People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) to challenge outdated and cruel attitudes towards animals.

She says, "I think that there are many aspects to the relationship between humans and animals. But briefly, humans appear to have always been fascinated by them from the time of cave paintings and before.

"People sometimes want them to be more human, and humans sometimes want to be more like animals. It's an interesting area.

"Any abuse of animals is the same as abuse of men, women or children."

CHEVELLE ROCKERS STILL NOT SPEAKING TO ESTRANGED BROTHER JOE

CHEVELLE rockers SAM and PETE LOEFFLER haven't spoken to their brother and former bandmate JOE in over a year, after the bassist left the group acrimoniously last year (05).

Joe quit Chevelle just as the family band was heading out on tour, leaving his brothers to scramble to temporarily replace him with GENO LENARDO, before DEAN BERNADINI took the position permanently.

And things are still far from cosy in the Loeffler family.

Pete tells MTV, "It's a bad scene. It's rare that we're ever in the same house at the same time.

"I haven't even spoken to him in over a year, and I probably shouldn't go into it too much, but he's demanded a lot of things and says if we don't give them to him, he'll sue us.

"So for the sake of my family, my friends and my own sanity, we have to figure it out. I'm not sure what's going to happen.

"But what fans need to know is that it was never easy, and it was never a good experience."

AILING FENDER DISCHARGED FROM HOSPITAL

LATEST: Singer FREDDY FENDER was discharged from hospital yesterday (12OCTO6), but remains gravely ill.

The Grammy Award winner, 69, had been getting treatment in Oklahoma for lung cancer, but was transferred to a hospital in San Antonio, Texas last week (ends08OCT06) because of a blood infection.

His wife VANGIE HUERTA says, "He's not doing too good. It's kind of like - we just got back yesterday and it's kind of breaking us."

RON ROGERS, who has acted as spokesman for Fender, reveals the BEFORE THE NEXT TEARDROP FALLS singer has considered making a public statement, but hasn't been able to yet.

He says, "Of course he's ill, gravely ill, and he's at home resting."

Fender was scheduled to have surgery in January (06) to remove the upper left lobe of his lung because of a fungal infection, but surgeons found two large tumours and left the lobe intact.

Last month (SEP06), doctors told Fender the cancer had spread from his left lung.

The singer, who has had problems with diabetes and hepatitis C, received a kidney from his daughter in 2002 and a liver transplant in 2004.

MADONNA GRANTED TEMPORARY ADOPTION ORDER

LATEST: Pop superstar MADONNA was granted an interim adoption order yesterday (12OCT06) by a court in the Malawian capital Lilongwe, according to her lawyer.

The HUNG UP singer will now be able to take one-year-old DAVID BANDA with her when she leaves the African country and she will eventually be granted full custody of the child, whose mother MARITA died shortly after his birth.

ALAN CHINULA, who represented Madonna in court in Lilongwe, said, "It's not an outright adoption until after a period of 18 months has elapsed but the adopted boy can travel with Madonna wherever she is staying, as long as he comes back to Malawi."

There are a number of other conditions attached to the adoption order, but Chinula refused to discuss them until he had briefed Madonna - who did not attend - in person.

TOM LIGOWE, senior assistant registrar at Lilongwe high court, confirms, "Madonna has been granted an interim order to adopt the child and she has been given observer status."

Ligowe revealed another court session will be held to confirm the exact wording of the adoption order.

CONNERY HONOURED IN ROME

British stage star DARREN DAY has been declared bankrupt, despite earning more than $1.8 million (GBP1 million) a year at the height of his career.

TURKISH AUTHOR PAMUK WINS 2006 NOBEL PRIZE FOR LITERATURE

Controversial Turkish author ORHAN PAMUK was named the winner of the 2006 Nobel Prize for Literature yesterday (12OCT06).

The 54-year-old has earned himself a reputation for dealing with controversial issues in his Islamic homeland, and has faced legal action in Turkey for discussing the country's actions during World War I.

A statement from the Swedish Academy, whose members select the Nobel Prize winners, reads, "In the quest for the melancholic soul of his native city, (Pamuk) has discovered new symbols for the clash and interlacing of cultures.

"Pamuk has said that growing up, he experienced a shift from a traditional Ottoman family environment to a more Western-oriented lifestyle.

"He wrote about this in his first published novel, A FAMILY CHRONICLE... which in the spirit of THOMAS MANN follows the development of a family over three generations."

Pamuk also received a cheque for 10 million kronor ($1.3 million/GBP740,000).

CASSIDY 'ON ROAD TO RECOVERY'

LATEST: Rapper CASSIDY is conscious again after suffering a fractured skull in a car crash in New Jersey last week (ends06OCT06).

Cassidy, who was a passenger in a sports utility vehicle and also broke many bones in the left side of his face, is "on the road to recovery" and keen to start recording music again in the near future.

His lawyer SIMON ROSEN tells MTV, "He's a fighter. He wants to get out of the hospital as soon as possible so he can finish up his album. I always joked with him that he was hardheaded, and in this case, it's a blessing he has a hard head.

"(He's) in great spirits, but a bit incoherent at times."

Police allege truck driver JAVIER TRUJILLO GONZALEZ, 36, ran a red light before turning into a junction, where he smashed into the vehicle Cassidy was travelling in. He has been issued with a summons for making in improper turn.
