FENDER SUFFERS BLOOD INFECTION
LATEST: Texan Tejano star FREDDY FENDER's lung cancer battle has suffered a setback after the star was rushed to a new hospital with a blood infection.
In January (06), the BEFORE THE NEXT TEARDROP FALLS singer, 69, underwent an operation to remove the upper left lobe of his lung following a fungal infection but doctors subsequently discovered two large tumours there. A scan later found nine more tumours.
He has since been receiving treatment for cancer in Oklahoma, but was transferred to the University Hospital in San Antonio, Texas, on Wednesday (04OCT06) after medics diagnosed a new infection.
His daughter TAMMY HUERTA MALLINI insists he'll return to Oklahoma as soon as he's recovered.
She says, "We wanted to make sure he was strong and alert before he received any chemotherapy or radiation because that could heal him."
Fender has been plagued by health problems in recent years. He received a kidney from his daughter in 2002 and a liver transplant in 2004. He has also had problems with diabetes and hepatitis C.
