LATEST: German Chancellor ANGELA MERKEL has blasted the Berlin opera company which yesterday (27SEP06) scrapped a MOZART production over fears it would incite violence.
IDOMENEO features the severed heads of the Prophet Muhammad, Jesus and Buddha in one scene, and was axed by the Deutsche Oper over fears of a Muslim backlash. Islam considers any image of the prophet to be blasphemous.
However, Merkel insists the decision is outrageous and fears theatre bosses are giving in too easily to extremists.
She says, "We must be careful that we do not flinch out of fear of radicals who are prepared to use violence.
"Self-censorship for reasons of fear is not acceptable. It should only be allowed when it is done responsibly within a genuine and completely violence-free dialogue of cultures."
The head of the Deutsche Oper, KIRSTEN HARMS, claims the production was cancelled on the advice of the police.
