The artist formerly known as CAT STEVENS has launched a scathing attack on POPE BENEDICT XVI for his recent comments about Islam.
The Catholic leader sparked huge controversy earlier this month (SEP06) when he quoted from a medieval text which attacks some of the Prophet Mohammed's teachings as "evil and inhuman".
And the Muslim convert, now known as YUSUF ISLAM, insists the remarks prove the pontiff is far from perfect.
The Catholic school educated singer says, "At one point I used to believe that the Pope was infallible."
He adds, "(The Pope) should have looked elsewhere if he wanted to quote but we respect (him) and his position - I do believe he has retracted in a way that statement and that's all to the good."
The Pope has since apologised for the incident, insisting his words were misconstrued.
Islam became a Muslim in 1977 after a near-death experience and quit the music industry two years later. He will release his first pop music album in 28 years in November (06).
