LATEST: Late CROCODILE HUNTER star STEVE IRWIN was laid to rest with story-telling at a candlelit private funeral held at his zoo in Queensland, Australia, on Saturday (09SEP06).
The crusading naturalist, who died last Monday (04SEP06) after being stung in the chest by a stingray while diving on the Great Barrier Reef, loved telling tales around camp fires during trips to the Australian outback, and his family and friends recounted their favourite memories of Irwin.
Irwin's father BOB says, "Because Steve loved the Bush so much and yarning around the camp fire, the service was held just like he would have wanted, with everyone telling their favourite stories around a candlelit fire.
"It was what he would have wanted and it has brought some family closure to his life."
Irwin will also be honoured at a public memorial service to be held next week (begs18AEP06).
