EIGHTIES GUILT FIRES ELTON'S AIDS CHARITY WORK

SIR ELTON JOHN does all he can to help the fight against Aids because he feels terrible about ignoring pleas to help when he was a drug addict during the 1980s.

The rocker founded the Elton John Aids Foundation just months after abandoning his hedonist lifestyle in 1990, and he has since gone out of his way to raise millions for medical research into the killer disease.

He says, "In the 80s I didn't really do much for Aids. I was too unreliable at that time in my life, with drugs and drink involved, to actually come to the fore and be accountable.

"When I got sober in 1990, then I realised that my life was just so out of whack, so self-absorbed, so self-obsessed and six months after that I did get sober and I thought, 'Right, I'm gonna do something now.'"

The British star admits his charity work is now more rewarding than all his musical achievements and accolades - especially when he gets the chance to meet the people his efforts have helped.

He adds, "It's really, really satisfying. I am doing something decent with my life, I'm not wasting it. I'm not putting it up my nose, I'm not drinking it, I'm not putting it down my throat, I'm actually doing something that is worthwhile and I wish I had come to my senses much earlier."

ABUSED LEE UPSET SHE DIDN'T FOLLOW CLUES IN HER OWN SONGS

EVANESCENCE singer AMY LEE is still mad at herself for staying in an abusive romance with ex BEN MOODY for three years - because her own lyrics were telling her it was time to move on.

The couple, who formed the goth-rock group together, split shortly before Moody quit the band in 2003, and Lee has never been happier.

But she accepts she could have been happier a lot earlier in her life if she'd taken heed of the songs she wrote with Moody.

She tells America's Spin magazine, "After I recorded those songs, I was listening to my own words on GOING UNDER. When it goes to the chorus, what I would have loved to hear myself sing is, 'I'm leaving and I'm not going to put up with this anymore.' But instead the line is, 'I'm going under, drowning in you.'

"I was thinking to myself, 'You know what you need to do, and you're not doing it.'"

Lee admits the night she heard her ex was planning to quit the group in the middle of a tour, she refused to beg him to stay.

She adds, "Ben is all about the drama. He's done a lot of irrational things, so you learn not to be surprised by anything.

"Ben was a really unhappy person. When you're miserable, you don't want anyone around you to be happy. So, with him gone, we felt like a weight had been lifted. I have pictures from that day. We all look giddy."

Lee admits she hasn't spoken to Moody since meeting him briefly at the Grammy Awards in 2004. Moody, now an in-demand songwriter, declined to comment for the Spin article.

LEGAL WRANGLE FOR ROBBIE AS EX MANAGER SNAPS

LATEST: Pop star ROBBIE WILLIAMS is reportedly facing legal action from former TAKE THAT manager NIGEL MARTIN-SMITH after he launched a terrifying attack on the mogul in new track THE NINETIES.

The outspoken singer's shocking song, which features on his upcoming album RUDEBOX, detail how he has fantasised about gouging the pop mogul's eyes out, sniping, "Either you're a thief or you're s**t, which one will you admit to? Such an evil man, I used to fantasise about taking a Stanley knife and playing around with your eyes."

Williams, who rocketed to fame with the British boy band before going solo, claims Martin-Smith forced him to change his name, lose weight and even refused to pay the group for a successful European tour.

But after years of being slammed by the ANGELS singer, Martin-Smith has snapped, and has reportedly hired top libel and defamation lawyer QC ANDREW CALDECOTT to take care of matters.

An unnamed music executive tells British newspaper The Daily Mirror, "Robbie has called into question Nigel's honesty and ability as a manager when it's well-known that without him he wouldn't have a career in the first place. This has got to stop."

A source close to Martin-Smith adds, "He has always kept a dignified silence despite all of Robbie's remarks but he has overstepped the mark this time and Nigel is upset and angry."

SIMPSON SACKS PUBLICIST

LATEST: Pop star JESSICA SIMPSON has fired her longtime publicist ROB SHUTER after last week's (ends03SEP06) debacle surrounding her supposed relationship with JOHN MAYER.

Both People and Us Weekly magazines ran cover stories suggesting the pair were dating and People even quoted Simpson as saying, "I'm in love!"

According to news website TMZ.com, reports began surfacing this week (beg04SEP06) that Mayer was furious with the coverage and felt used by the Simpson camp to help boost album sales.

Simpson appeared on US talk show THE VIEW Tuesday (05SEP06), where she desperately tried to do some damage control stating, "I am actually not dating John Mayer."

Sources tell TMZ the Simpson camp had been unhappy with Shuter for some time and that the Mayer fiasco "was the last straw" in a series of events leading up to the sacking.

Mayer posted a message on his official website last Thursday (31AUG06), soon after the story broke saying simply, "Really enjoying this song" above a picture for PUBLIC ENEMY's hit DON'T BELIEVE THE HYPE.

MISS AMERICA SLAMS HILTON FOR DRINK DRIVING

LATEST: Reigning Miss America JENNIFER BERRY, who is the national spokesperson for Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), has slammed PARIS HILTON for driving while intoxicated and insists the socialite needs to take responsibility for her actions.

Hilton was arrested Thursday (07SEPT06) after Los Angeles police pulled her over for driving erratically and found she was legally over the limit.

Berry says, "We're always very disappointed when we hear about any alcohol related DUI's. We're very thankful no one was injured or killed.

"However, I'm very disappointed, because even at .08, her judgment was impaired.

"Her inhibitions were impaired and she needed to take responsibility for the fact she had consumed that much alcohol."

Hilton has come under fire from safety groups who insist she is setting the wrong example for young drivers after being caught behind the wheel while intoxicated.

MASSIVE ATTACK PULL OUT OF VIRGIN FESTIVAL SHOW

British duo MASSIVE ATTACK has been forced to pull out of this weekend's (09-10SEP06) Virgin Festival in Toronto, Canada, after failing to get the proper work visa paperwork completed in time.

The group was scheduled to headline the festival at Islands Park.

In a statement on the group's website, the band's management explains, "In spite of timely and coordinated efforts, the essential US immigration visas were not issued in time for the beginning of the Massive Attack North American tour."

Upcoming dates in Canada, Michigan and Illinois have been postponed due to the red-tape hold-up, but these shows will be rescheduled.

The Virgin Festival will go ahead as planned with a bill featuring THE STROKES, THE RACONTEURS and WOLFMOTHER.

LUDACRIS DEMANDS APOLOGY FROM OPRAH

LATEST: Rapper/actor LUDACRIS is demanding an apology from OPRAH WINFREY after the chat show host criticised his lyrics.

The feud began last year (05) after rapper Ludacris, real name CHRIS BRIDGES, appeared on THE OPRAH WINFREY show to promote his film CRASH, but was instead interrogated by the host about his raunchy lyrics.

The TV star claims rappers need to be responsible for the messages they put out when they wield so much influence, but Ludacris stands by his work and insists that Oprah apologises, saying, "I respect Oprah's opinion, but she did not at all respect mine.

"I want her to admit she was wrong."

LOHAN ROBBED AT HEATHROW AIRPORT

LINDSAY LOHAN was left devastated in London yesterday afternoon (07SEP06) when her beloved Hermes Birkin bag was stolen from her trolley at Heathrow Airport.

The actress/singer was travelling through the airport with boyfriend HARRY MORTON on her way back to America from the Venice Film Festival when she noticed the bag, containing jewellery and her asthma medication was missing.

Lohan frantically contacted airport police, according to website TMZ.com, who confirmed, "The theft of a bag at Heathrow Airport was reported to police by a 20-year-old woman."

Lohan's publicist LINDSAY SLOANE has confirmed her client was robbed at the airport, adding, "She is begging for the return of the items. She doesn't care how she gets them back, she just wants her stuff back."

DEGENERES TO HOST 2007 OSCARS

ELLEN DEGENERES will host the Oscars for the first time in 2007.

The comedienne-turned-US talk show host will take charge of the 79th Academy Awards on 27 February (07) at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood.

DeGeneres hasn't even appeared on an Academy Awards telecast, but ceremony producer LAURA ZISKIN is convinced she's the perfect choice to take over from this year's (06) host JON STEWART.

Ziskin says, "Ellen DeGeneres was born to host the Academy Awards.

"There is no more challenging hosting job in show business. It requires someone who can keep the show alive and fresh and moving, as well as someone who is a flat-out great entertainer. Ellen completely fits the bill.

"I can already tell she is going to set the bar very high for herself and therefore for all of us involved in putting on the show."

Emmy Award winner DeGeneres didn't waste any time in accepting the chance to host the Oscars. She says, "When Laura Ziskin called, I was thrilled.

"There's two things I've always wanted to do in my life - one is to host the Oscars. The second is to get a call from Laura Ziskin. You can imagine that day's diary entry."

DeGeneres isn't new to showbusiness' biggest stages - she has twice hosted the Primetime Emmy Awards telecast and co-hosted the show in 1994.

She also earned acclaim for her first solo Emmy stint, which took place shortly after the terrorist attacks of 9/11.

LONGORIA GUESSED THAT CROSS WAS PREGNANT

LATEST: EVA LONGORIA turned celebrity sleuth when she noticed DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES co-star MARCIA CROSS behaving strangely during a cast party - and prompted the actress to confess she was pregnant.

Earlier this week (beg04SEP06), Cross went public with the news she's expecting her first child with new husband TOM MAHONEY but Longoria was among the first to figure out her pal was a mum-to-be.

And, though her Desperate Housewives character, GABRIELLE SOLIS, is no one's idea of the perfect babysitter, Longoria insists she wants to be Cross' first choice if she even needs a break from being mum.

PHOTOGRAPHER FALLS FOUL OF LOPEZ

JENNIFER LOPEZ has been branded a jealous wife after allegedly sending a bodyguard over to break up a dance between her husband MARC ANTHONY and an old friend.

Brazilian photographer SELMA FONSECA was left speechless when she was reprimanded for dancing with Anthony at music producer SWIZZ BEATZ's birthday party after the MTV Video Music Awards last week (31AUG06).

She claims a bodyguard stormed onto the dancefloor and told her to stop dancing with the Latino hunk.

Fonseca tells US tabloid the Globe, "I've known Marc for years. We danced a little bit, and he held me - but it was just a friendly thing.

"All of a sudden, one of J Lo's bodyguards comes over and points a finger in my face. He says, 'Don't ever dance with Marc...!' I couldn't believe it."

But Fonseca, who later took a photo of a surly looking Lopez as she left the party with her husband, insists the warning won't stop her from hitting the dancefloor with Anthony in the future.

The defiant snapper adds, "This doesn't bother me one bit."

ALIAS STAR ACKER WELCOMES BABY AVA

ALIAS star AMY ACKER and her husband JAMES CARPINELLO have welcomed a daughter named AVA GRACE.

Ava joins older brother JACKSON JAMES, who is 19 months old.

Acker's representative tells American publication People, "Amy, James and Jackson are enjoying the new addition to their family."

The 29-year-old star played JENNIFER GARNER's nemesis KELLY PEYTON on the show and also played WINIFRED "FRED" BURKLE on the hit TV series BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER and spinoff ANGEL.

Hollywood star ROBIN TUNNEY has apologised to her friends after lying about her character's exit from hit TV drama PRISON BREAK.

Tunney's lawyer character VERONICA DONOVAN was sensationally killed off, and the actress admits she had to hide her shock departure from her neighbours.

She tells the New York Post, " I was always brought up to say please and thank you and always tell the truth, and people were saying, 'Oh my God, what's going to happen with your character next year?' and I wasn't allowed to say, so I felt really guilty because I was lying to all these people, including my neighbours.

"You know, the character had its run, and I was really happy to be part of a show that was so successful and that people loved so much, but there was really nothing else for her to do."

SLITS REFORM AS A PUNK SUPERGROUP

Former THE SLITS bandmates ARI UP and TESSA POLLITT have reformed the act as a punk supergroup with ex members of the SEX PISTOLS and ADAM + THE ANTS.

Up and Pollitt's new-look Slits features former Pistols drummer PAUL COOK and ADAM ANT's longtime sidekick MARCO PIRRONI, as well as the punk stars' daughters.

The group has recorded the first Slits tracks since 1981, when the band split.

The Slits are planning a US tour in October and November (06).

ROCKY STAR TO WED

ROCKY star CARL WEATHERS is planning to wed again - at 58.

The former Canadian Football League star, who played boxer APOLLO CREED in the first Rocky film, proposed to longtime girlfriend JENNIFER PETERSON, a documentary maker, over a meal at Vancouver, Canada restaurant Lift on Saturday (02SEP06).

Weathers was previously married to MARY ANN CASTLE.

SHAKUR'S MOTHER SCRAPS 10TH ANNIVERSARY MEMORIAL IN SOWETO

LATEST: The mother of slain rapper TUPAC SHAKUR has scrapped plans to mark the 10th anniversary of her son's death in South Africa due to "personal reasons."

Former Black Panther activist AFENI SHAKUR was planning to commemorate the death of her son by scattering his ashes in Soweto during a trip to South Africa with family members.

Shakur also planned to meet former South African leader NELSON MANDELA and visit hospitals and orphanages during the eight-day trip later this month (SEP06).

Instead, Shakur will host a less ambitious memorial with family, friends and fans of the late rap star in the Peace Garden at the Tupac Amaru Shakur Foundation headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia, on Saturday (09SEP06).

Afeni Shakur now hopes to visit Soweto next summer (JUN07), to mark the anniversary of the Soweto uprising as well as what would have been her son's 36th birthday.

She says, "My family and I regret that they must postpone the trip to South Africa to a later date, due to personal reasons.

"We understand the work and time that everyone has put into making this trip possible."
