SIMPSON WINS A CAR

JESSICA SIMPSON was a big winner at the MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) on Thursday (31AUG06) even though she wasn't nominated for an award - she drove away a brand new car.

The singer/actress, who presented the Best Dance Video prize to THE PUSSYCAT DOLLS, was among the celebrities who took part in a Chrysler promotion at a pre-VMAs party.

Stars were invited to pick a key from a large bowl and if their pick started a nearby Crossfire convertible, they drove it home. Simpson picked the right key.

She said, "I can't believe I won. I'm in shock."

Ironically, Simpson's ex-husband NICK LACHEY also picked a key in the promotion minutes before - he wasn't as lucky as his former wife.

BARRY MANILOW has been given a big boost as he recovers from hip surgery - his Las Vegas Hilton bosses have taken out a full-page ad to congratulate the showman on his Emmy win.

The COPACABANA singer took home an Emmy last Sunday night (27AUG06) for his MUSIC + PASSION TV special - hours before checking into hospital for the surgery to correct his painful problem.

And now Hilton bosses TOM BARRACK and NICK RIBIS splashed out for an ad in the Los Angeles Times newspaper (01SEP06) to let Manilow know just what he means to the hotel and casino, where he has been a resident performer for the past year.

In the ad, the hotel bosses write, "Winning the Emmy is just one more acknowledgement of your enduring talent. You and your show are the best in the business and we are honoured that you call the Las Vegas Hilton your home."

His set included a cover of the EURYTHMICS' SWEET DREAMS and a short guitar-riff tribute to one of his favourite tunes, NIRVANA's grunge anthem SMELLS LIKE TEEN SPIRIT.

He tells MTV News, "I'm sure (KURT) COBAIN rolls over twice (in his grave) every time I play it... but screw it."

Comedienne and talk show host ELLEN DeGENERES thanked New York City fans who queued in the rain to see a Central Park concert she hosted with a special BEYONCE KNOWLES performance.

More than 10,000 fans queued for free tickets to the open-air JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE concert, which was taped for the season premiere of DeGeneres' show.

The dedication impressed DeGeneres so much that she decided to bring forward a Beyonce performance to say thanks.

She says, "It was raining all week long, we did our first shows in Central Park in New York and it was a concert with Justin Timberlake for the first show and we surprised everybody and it was Beyonce for the second show.

"It was pouring down raining and New Yorkers lined up at 7am, 10,000 people lined up waiting to get into the park until, like, two in the afternoon... It was great."

Both concerts will feature on the ELLEN show next week (beg04SEP06).

"There's nothing that's hardcore and fun that can really compete with a lot of stuff that's similar. If you go to a bookstore to their graphic novel section if you look at the Christian stuff it's pretty dorky and cheesy stuff. It's not as hip and edgy and cool.

"Spirit Warriors is the story of six or seven kids that are out there; they're gnarly skateboarders that are edgy kids who are living out their faith in Jesus Christ.

"In college I had a little Yamaha and I used to ride that back and forth to class. When I first moved out to Los Angeles I had a small Honda and I could barely make it on the freeway with that thing.

"I ride a Sportster in the film and I took lessons from JACK GILL, who was our stunt co-ordinator.

"Harley and Disney then gave us our bikes - they're shipping my Sportster out to me. I'm going to take it to Colorado, it's just too dangerous to ride around LA."

Reggaeton superstar DADDY YANKEE has set up a 'fraud watch' initiative on his official website in a bid to stop callous people from duping his fans.

The hip-hop hero's devotees have been caught up in a number of ticket scams recently, including one in South Carolina last month (AUG06) when a woman claiming to be Daddy Yankee's tour manager took hundreds of dollars from fans who turned up for a concert that never was.

Three hours after the rapper was scheduled to appear onstage, fans grew restless and challenged the woman, who then drove off in a limousine - with all the money. The concert, which was announced on a local radio station, was a scam.

Now, Daddy Yankee, real name RAYMOND AYALA, has called in officials to investigate that scam and he's getting tough on future crooks buy offering fans an email address where they can report suspected fraud.

His publicist says, "Every day there are new scams."

ISLEY SENTENCED TO THREE YEARS FOR TAX EVASION

Soul singer RONALD ISLEY was sentenced to three years in prison yesterday (01SEP06) for tax evasion.

The ISLEY BROTHERS legend, who was also ordered to pay $3.1 million (GBP1.7 million) to the US Internal Revenue Service (IRS), engaged in a "pervasive, long-term, pathological" evasion of federal taxes, according to Los Angeles US District Court Judge DEAN PREGERSON.

The 65-year-old was found guilty of five counts of tax evasion and one count of willful failure to file a tax return last October (05), and returned to court to discover his fate yesterday. During last year's three-week trial, prosecutors contended Isley failed to make any payments to the IRS between 1976 and 1996.

Isley's lawyer told the court yesterday that his client was selling off his assets in an attempt to pay his tax bill, and also attempted to secure probation for his client because of his poor health, following a stroke and a battle with kidney cancer.

But Judge Pregerson refused to take Isley's medical conditions into account.

KASABIAN ATTACK 'MIDGET' TIMBERLAKE

British rockers KASABIAN have launched a blistering tirade against JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE, branding the heart-throb a "midget" and a "puppet".

The astonishing attack comes as the EMPIRE four-piece are riding high in the UK charts with their number one album, and Timberlake is about to top the singles charts with his comeback track SEXYBACK.

FEDERLINE ACCEPTS BRITNEY'S EXPLANATION FOR LAP BABY MISTAKE

KEVIN FEDERLINE has given his wife BRITNEY SPEARS permission to drive home with baby SEAN PRESTON on her lap - if she feels the need to race away from the paparazzi.

UPSET HARDY GETS LEGAL TO KEEP HIS NAME OUT OF WICKER MAN REMAKE

British movie-maker ROBIN HARDY is so upset about the remake of his cult film THE WICKER MAN, he has hired a legal team to make sure he isn't inaccurately connected to the new film.

Hardy, who also appeared in the creepy 1972 film, insisted an internet writing credit was removed - because he doesn't want fans of the original film to think he was in any way a part of the NEIL LaBUTE remake.

And LaBute admits he didn't expect his new film to create such a negative fuss - as fans of the original hit the internet to blast the very idea of the remake.

The film-maker upset fans by relocating the setting of the film from the Scottish Highlands to America and changing the sex of the film's chief villain from CHRISTOPHER LEE to ELLEN BURSTYN.

He says, "I understand how people are very territorial about what they like and I understand how the original actors and director can think, 'God, how can they touch us.'

"But it's not something that I want people to judge whether they like one better than the other."
