VANDROSS' MOTHER LAUNCHES DIABETES CAMPAIGN

Late soul crooner LUTHER VANDROSS' mother has launched a new campaign urging youngsters to be careful what they eat - after losing her husband and her famous son to diabetes.

Retired nurse MARY IDA VANDROSS, 82, insists the disease that has claimed her husband, three children and a grandson strikes early on and lies dormant for years.

Using the release of her late son's hits album THE ULTIMATE LUTHER VANDROSS, the singer's mother wants parents to be more mindful of what their children are eating and urge them to make healthy choices.

Launching her anti-diabetes campaign in US tabloid the Globe, May Ida says, "Young people aren't taking it seriously enough. This is a deadly disease and it's growing because we are not paying attention to our diet and not getting out there and exercising.

"Young people never think they're in danger of dying, but they are."

GROHL MAKES GOOD ON PROMISE TO TRAPPED MINERS

Rocker DAVE GROHL will make good on his promise to buy two rescued Australian miners a beer when he travels Down Under in October (06).

Grohl sent a message to TODD RUSSELL and BRANT WEBB when they were trapped in a mine in Tasmania in May (06) saying, "Two tickets to any Foos show, anywhere and two cold beers."

The rocker sent the message on the eleventh day of their ordeal, after learning that they had requested Foo Fighters' rock anthems on an iPod to help them drown out the sound of drilling as rescuers cautiously tunnelled towards them.

They were rescued on 9 May (06) after being trapped for 15 days underground after a rock fall.

EVERLONG singer Grohl will be playing two acoustic shows at the Sydney Opera House and plans to catch up with his new mates.

He says, "I was willing to foot the bill to have them come half way around the world just to hang out and have a beer, and then it turned out they couldn't come."

The rocker isn't planning on letting the guys get off with a quick pint, adding, "I'm not having just one beer with those dudes. We're going for it. This is going to be a big night."

Former SHALAMAR singer JODY WATLEY is chuckling after playing a practical joke on the US media, leading journalists to believe she's undergone a major facelift.

The 1980s disco icon sent out staged photographs of her looking bruised, bloodied and bandaged to promote her new album THE MAKEOVER - and some newspapers fell for the ruse.

Watley giggles, "I was doing the photos as a spoof because of my new album's title."

The A NIGHT TO REMEMBER hitmaker insists the spoof story about her plastic surgery was hilarious for her family and friends because they all know how opposed to cosmetic enhancement she is.

She adds, "I would never touch my face. I want to grow old gracefully like LENA HORNE and my mom, who's 70 and still looks beautiful."

FEDERLINE LANDED TV ROLE FROM BAD PERFORMANCE

BRITNEY SPEARS' husband KEVIN FEDERLINE was devastated by the poor reviews he received for his rap performance at the Teen Choice Awards, but the gig ended up landing him a role on the hit show CSI: CRIME SCENE INVESTIGATION.

Federline reportedly put on a brave face after the scathing reviews came in after his 20 August (06) performance, but friends say the rapper was hit hard by the criticism.

A source tells American publication Us Weekly, "He was actually crying."

The next day at the couple's Malibu, California home the source says Britney "also cried for him...She didn't leave him alone all day."

There was one good thing to come out of the debacle - CSI writer DUSTIN ABRAHAM saw the show and loved Federline's performance, which inspired him to write a character for Federline into the show.

The former back-up dancer will guest star in October (06) as the leader of a violent gang.

Abraham explains, "He has this cockiness and confidence that I like. But I told him...he needs to be the guy that you hate. It's the perfect role."

Federline has already finished shooting his spot and Abraham says, "There wasn't a lot of acting - more beating (people up). I thought he was awesome!"

PARIS PARTIES AT PURE WITH FORMER BOYFRIEND

PARIS HILTON celebrated Paris Hilton Day in Las Vegas, Nevada by partying the night away at Pure nightclub with former boyfriend CHAD MUSKA.

On Tuesday (29AUG06) the mayor of the city made the official declaration and presented the aspiring singer with a key to Sin City.

After proclaiming that Las Vegas was her "favourite place in the world to come to party", Hilton then carried on with the former pro skateboarder.

The two dirty danced the night away, grinding, groping and even kissing for the cameras.

Hilton has obviously forgiven Muska for making a rude comment about her sister NICKY earlier this month (AUG06).

While Muska was acting as a guest DJ at Hollywood hotspot Hyde he made an inappropriate comment, which caused Nicky's boyfriend, ENTOURAGE star KEVIN CONNOLLY, to punch him in the face.

The group seemed to have kissed and made up with Nicky being seen partying along with the couple.

Reunited grunge rockers DINOSAUR JR are begging fans to help them find the thief who stole a treasure trove of equipment outside a New York hotel.

WILLIAMS: 'I WAS NEVER GOING TO MAKE COOL MUSIC'

Pop superstar ROBBIE WILLIAMS has defended his ''un-credible'' music, because he is staying loyal to his roots.

The FEEL singer admits he could never have performed in an acclaimed rock band, because he spent so much time watching cabaret acts in his youth.

The British star explains, "I'm never going to be RADIOHEAD or MUSE or whoever - I'm Robbie Williams.

"To the six million people who keep buying my records, I'm the best thing out there. But there's a whole group of people who think I'm a joke, that I am some end-of-the-pier entertainer, which I am.

"I was brought up on holiday camps. My father is a cabaret artist - in the 1980s I saw shed-loads of cabaret. It's where I grew up, that's where I learnt my craft, so that's what I am.

"I'd be an entertainment manager in Caernarfon Bay (in Wales) if I hadn't written ANGELS. Some people will look at that and go, 'Well that's un-credible, and comes from a naff place.' Yeah we do! That's where we come from.

"That's where I come from. I'm not THOM YORKE. Don't know where he went on holiday, he probably went to museums and burlesque theatre or something."

MTV LOVES SUSAN CAGLE!

2006 MTV Video Music Awards will be held at New York's Radio City Music Hall, Thursday, August 31, 2006

Susan Cagle will be at the VMAs this year in support of her debut album The Subway Recordings! She will pre-tape a full concert (5 cameras) in the subway (where she recorded her album) which will be available on Overdrive for the VMAs. She will also appear on the red-carpet during the VMA pre-show and will perform several songs as bumpers in and out of commercial breaks. VJs will reference Susan and tell people to go to Overdrive to watch the full concert. She will also get a TRL News piece that will run after the VMAs.

FARRELL GRANTED A THREE-YEAR RESTRAINING ORDER

Movie star COLIN FARRELL has been granted a three-year restraining order against a woman attempting to sue the actor for stalking her.

DESSARAE BRADFORD, who confronted Farrell during a taping of THE TONIGHT SHOW last month (JUL06), has been ordered to stay at least 150 yards away from the MIAMI VICE star and his family.

In granting the order, Los Angeles Superior Court officials accepted that Bradford remains a threat to Farrell.

Farrell's battles with Bradford began in late 2004 when she filed a handwritten lawsuit claiming the actor pestered her with phone calls.

Bradford accused the Irish hunk of harassment and stalking her, alleging he wouldn't leave her alone after initially befriending her. She demanded $5,000 (GBP2,780) from the star, plus the return of artwork and an erotic tape.

Farrell has always maintained he had never met Bradford before she filed suit against him. The lawsuit was later dismissed.

Bradford then took a televised truth test on US TV show LIE DETECTOR, which revealed she was, in fact, lying about her encounters with Farrell.

ANISTON DROPS SUIT AGAINST PHOTOGRAPHER

JENNIFER ANISTON has agreed to drop her suit against a photographer who snapped topless shots of her in return for a promise he'll never publish the pictures.

PETER BRANDT took the candid shots in Los Angeles last year (05) and always maintained he did nothing illegal to obtain them.

Brandt's representatives sent out a statement yesterday (30AUG06), in which they wrote, "Even though they were legally obtained (no trees were climbed or trespassing done), Peter pulled the photos from publication."

DOUGLAS ASKED SON TO URINATE ON HIM

Hollywood legend MICHAEL DOUGLAS was forced to ask his six-year-old son DYLAN to urinate on his back after he was stung by a jellyfish recently.

And Douglas, 61, thinks young Dylan enjoyed the experience more than he should have.

He says, "I turned to Dylan and went, 'Son, you're just going to have to pee-pee on Daddy's back.'

"He did a brief pause and went, 'Excuse me? Let me get some more water to drink. I don't get these chances very often!"

DUFF ENDORSES COSMETIC SURGERY

HILARY DUFF insists she would consider having cosmetic surgery in later life, because she always wants to feel good about her body.

The MATERIAL GIRLS star, 19, is confused by young actresses who go under the knife in search of physical perfection, but she can fully understand why older leading ladies combat the passing of time with surgery.

She says, "I don't have anything against people who have surgery. If I get older and feel uncomfortable about something then maybe (I will have it). I never say never.

"Some things are hard to deal with for a woman as you grow older. I think everyone should be able to feel good about themselves.

"I don't like it when it's really obvious and gets pointed out. Some people go overboard."

SPEARS SCULPTOR CREATES BABY SURI'S STOOL

The sculptor behind BRITNEY SPEARS' controversial pregnancy statue is set to shock again with his own take on the first stool squeezed out by TOM CRUISE and KATIE HOLMES' reclusive daughter SURI.

DANIEL EDWARDS' bronze sculpture, entitled SURI'S BRONZED BABY POOP, went on display at the Capla Kesting Fine Art gallery in New York yesterday (30AUG06).

The piece is inspired by baby Suri's first movement and will be sold to the highest bidder at an eBay internet auction when the exhibition ends in late September (06).

Edwards stunned the art world earlier this year (MAR06) with his homage to Spears' labour, MONUMENT TO PRO-LIFE: THE BIRTH OF SEAN PRESTON.

That piece featured a stone Spears on all fours on a bear skin rug, ready to give birth to her first son.

The Suri stool isn't for real but gallery officials insist Edwards' latest creation is more than a publicity stunt.

In a statement, they write: "It's partially a statement on modern media that celebrity poop has more entertainment value than health, famine or other critical issues facing society and governments today."

STRAIT LEADS COUNTRY MUSIC HALL OF FAME INDUCTEES

Country superstar GEORGE STRAIT and singer SONNY JAMES will join session musician HAROLD BRADLEY as the newest inductees into Nashville, Tennessee's Country Music Hall Of Fame.

The formal inductions will take place during the 40th annual Country Music Association Awards on 6 November (06).

Strait's induction, in a category for artists who achieved national prominence between 1975 and the present day, will be his second.

Strait, James and Bradley will increase membership in the Country Music Hall Of Fame from 95 to 98 inductees.
